Sustainable Shopping List
Food waste has become a huge worldwide problem with environmental and economical effects.
These effects can be perceived distant and not of our concern, but they are closer than we think. For this reason, we must commit ourselves is this battle.
That’s why In-Domus thought of proposing two simple rules to follow for a sustainable grocery shopping, environmentally and economically speaking.
The first main rule is “plan your meals”, perfect if you happen to eat out of home often.
At the beginning it will require a little time, but once you get used to it your life will be a lot easier. You will save money and you will reduce food waste.
Planning your meals in advance allow you to know which food, and how much, you will consume in a week. In such a way you will not buy food that will go wasted.
If you want to go one step further, try to prepare your meals in advance. You will have prepared meals, without effort, for the whole week.
The second rule is to keep an eye on the “best by” date.
How many times you happened to buy some food and then discover that the expiry date was only a few days later? And how many times you happened to throw away unopened food because you did not check the expiry date?
Checking on the “best by” date will avoid you all that food wasting due to “unexpected expiration”. The environment and your pocket are going to thank you.
One more thing you can do not to waste expiring food is to download the app Too Good To Go, already available in Milan and other cities.
Joining the app, you can check if some shops in the neighbourhood (registered on the app) have some unsold food that you can buy at a minimum price.
In such a way you will bring home some great food, that otherwise would have been thrown away, for just a few euros. Everybody wins: your stomach, your pocket, the store owner, and the environment.
After reading our suggestions, do you think you will be able to start shopping in a sustainable way?
