31st of October is here again, the popular night of Halloween.
Even if this year we cannot go trick-or-treating and have costume parties, we should not get discouraged.
But how much do you know about Halloween? In-Domus wants to let you know some curiosities about this day that (maybe) you do not know…
– Halloween is not and American invention. Its origins date back to a Celtic festivity of Samhain, which was the “end-of-summer celebration”. This was the last day of the summer season and the beginning of winter, a crucial transition moment, considered almost like our New Years Eve. Also, it was believed that, overnight, the veil dividing the mortal and immortal worlds got so thin to allows dead to get through. Later, the tradition of the night of Samhain was imported in the United States, becoming the current Halloween.
–the “Halloween” term comes from the “all hallows ‘eve” expression. With the advent of Christianity, the pagan festivity was converted into a celebration of all Saints.
– The legend of Jack-o-Lantern and the carved pumpkin. . It is told that Jack was an Irish blacksmith that, having he fooled the devil more than once, was rejected both from Heaven and Hell. . Condemned to wander as a ghost for eternity, story goes that during Halloween night, he roams the streets looking for a shelter. The carved pumpkin is a signal that there is no place for Jack in the house. What are you waiting? You should carve your pumpkin.
– Also the full moon is a symbol of Halloween, and in 2020 we will be lucky enough to enjoy it after a few years without it!
– Scary costumes were actually used to scare… the spirits returned on heart during the night of Halloween.
Now that you know all this curiosities you are ready to celebrate Halloween!
Just remember to be careful and respect all the Covid-19 regulations.
We suggest you to watch an horror movie, carve your pumpkin to cast out Jack and to take a look at the full moon… but beware of the ghosts!
